Sports career:
Took to playing with the sling as a little boy. Though never received any regular training in shooting, he was determined to be a crack shot. Through years of practice, first with a sling and later with an air gun, he became a real marksman with superb skills. Joined the Anhui provincial shooting team in 1982 and the national team in 1984.
High performances:
1983 National Games - 2nd pistol and air pistol
1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games - 1st free pistol 60 shots (first Olympic gold medal for China)
1986 Seoul Asian Games - 1st free pistol (660pts, surpassing WR), air pistol & free pistol team
1986 National Shooting Competition - Bettering WR in small-bore free pistol (662pts)
1990 Beijing Asian Games - four gold medals
1991 World Air Pistol Championship -1st
1991 Asian Championships - five gold medals
Reputed as both a "Gold Medal Athlete and Gold Medal Coach".
Honours:
1984 - Awarded National Sports Medal of Honour by the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission
1984 & 1986 - Twice selected one of National Top Ten Athletes
Coaching experience:
National head coach in women's pistol after his retirement towards the end of 1994. At the previous Olympic Games, both his trainees Li Duihong and Tao Luna struck gold, with Li Duihong winning the women's 25m sporting pistol in Atlanta in 1996 and Tao Luna winning the women's 10m air pistol in Sydney in 2000. Later he served as deputy chief coach of the Chinese national shooting team. Starting from March 2003, he took up the post of the national chief coach.
At present:
Chief coach of the national shooting team and Deputy Director of the Shooting and Archery Administrative Centre under the State Sport General Administration of China.
