<font size="4"><div>The MIT History Faculty offers about 70 subjects in the areas of Ancient, North American, European, East Asian, and Middle Eastern history. Students are encouraged to study the past from a variety of perspectives - social, economic, cultural, and political - and to understand the world they inhabit as a product of historical processes.</div><br /><div>Undergraduates can concentrate, minor, and major in History. There has been much discussion in recent years, on this campus and elsewhere, about the death of the book. Digitization and various forms of electronic media, some critics say, are rendering the printed text as obsolete as the writing quill. In this subject we will examine the claims for and against the demise of the book, but we also supplement these arguments with an historical perspective they lack: we examine books and printing technology during the Early Modern period of European history, from roughly 1450 to 1800. We will begin with the theoretical and historical overviews of Walter Ong and Elizabeth Eisenstein, after which we will study specific cases such as the writings and readers of Erasmus and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, English chapbooks, and stage plays in print. Finally, we will reconsider the issues raised by digital technologies today in light of these historical perspectives.
This subject is jointly listed as 21H.418 and CMS.880. It satisfies requirements towards the Major and the Minor in History and in Comparative Media Studies, and is also open to graduate students in the Comparative Media Studies Program and in other MIT and Harvard graduate programs.

Attendance is mandatory, and students are expected to arrive in class on time and prepared to discuss common readings. A student who misses two or more class sessions will automatically fail the subject. At the beginning of most class sessions, students will hand in two-page papers that address issues from that week's readings; the questions will be distributed in advance. A ten-page paper will be due in class in week #8, and a five page paper due on the last day of classes, in week #14. I will hand out instructions for these assignments later in the semester. There will be no exams and no final. Each assignment will be weighted as follows in the calculation of the final grade, although these calculations will also take into account improved performance during the course of the semester: Class Participation: 40 points Homework (8 assignments): 40 points (5 points each) Ten-page Paper: 80 points Five-page Paper: 40 points TOTAL: 200 POINTS Readings to Purchase Ong, Walter. In this seminar we will examine various issues related to the intersection of race and gender in Asian America, starting with the nineteenth century and working our way up to the present. Topics to be covered may include racial and gender discourse, the stereotyping of Asian American women and men in the media, Asian American masculinity, Asian American feminism and ethnic nationalism, gay and lesbian identity, class and labor issues, domestic violence, and the "cultural defense." The study of Asian Americans in film will form a significant component of this course. The class will require a final group project of 20-40 pages (depending on group size). In addition, there will be brief oral presentations and writing assignments during the course of the semester, and a bibliography project.

专题 :期末专题Final Project
你(你)们已被委任为麻省理工学院建造一个亚美女性及男性虚拟实境博物馆,你(你)们得自己决定博物馆里的馆藏资讯、手工艺品及其组织编排和呈现方式。在创建的博物馆中,你(你)们将要述说亚裔美国人的历史故事,并着重在性别、种族及社会阶层等议题的描绘。那么,在这博物馆里,你(你)们想说的是什么样的故事呢?

Final Project
You have been commissioned to build a Virtual Museum of Asian American Women and Men for MIT. You must decide what will go into the museum and how the information/artifacts will be organized and presented. In creating this museum, you will be telling the story of Asian American history, but with an explicit emphasis on gender, race, and class issues. What kind of story will you tell in the museum?
Issues to think about:
Whose story is it?
Who is telling the story?
Will you arrange your information chronologically or by theme?
Will you group "Asian Americans" together or have separate exhibits for different subethnic groups? (Chinese American, Vietnamese American, South Asian American, etc.)
Will you focus on "famous" people or "ordinary" people?
How can you use oral history?
How will you use visuals, artifacts, and text together to present your information to the public?

Important Issues for Asian American Men and Women
This will be a class-wide project. You will work in small groups of 3-4 to create your part of the museum. The project is intended to fulfill some of the same purposes of both an exam and a term paper. That is, you should show comprehensive mastery of the material and issues covered during the term, and you should conduct some original, in-depth research on a focused area and produce a piece of written work based on this research. Each group should submit a project that is equivalent to a 30-40 page term paper, in terms of research, thoughtfulness of organization, originality and clarity of writing. In addition, each student will submit a short (1-2 page) essay at the close of the term, reflecting on what s/he learned through the experience of constructing the museum.
Work on the project will be spread throughout the term. Groups will be asked to bring in "pieces" of the museum in the coming weeks so we can monitor progress. By working at a steady pace, we can avoid the end of the semester crush. There will be class time every week to discuss your progress. A class assistant will be available to help get everything on-line, and answer any questions about the WWW or HTML.

Overview
This class examines how and why twentieth-century Americans came to define the "good life" through consumption, leisure, and material abundance. We will explore how such things as department stores, nationally advertised brand-name goods, mass-produced cars, and suburbs transformed the American economy, society, and politics. The course is organized both thematically and chronologically. Each period deals with a new development in the history of consumer culture. Throughout we explore both celebrations and critiques of mass consumption and abundance.
Format, Grading and Assignments
The requirements for this class include two take-home papers based on the readings and lectures (25% each), one document collection (20%), one book review (20%) and class participation (10%). Throughout the semester, students will be expected to have completed the readings before class and come prepared to engage in discussion.

在1961年,评论家Lewis Mumford对美国的发展表达了不安的情绪:
当群众大量涌入郊区,一种新的社区俨然已成形,因而使得历史上有名的都市和典型的郊区住所更显得夸张可笑 -- 许多长得面貌相同,无法分辨的房屋座落在长相一成不变,且间距相同的道路上,位于无树木生存的市镇里,而一群相同阶级,拥有相同收入,年级也相仿,看着相同电视节目,吃着一样难吃、预先加工过的、且来自相同的冰箱的食物,内心与外在都遵守一种共同且普遍存在于大都会中心的一种模式。如此一来,在我们的时代,逃离到郊区所得到的,是一种低级的、制式的环境,而要离开这样的环境是不可能的。

Paper #1
Compare and contrast Dreiser's and Lewis's views on consumer culture. Keep these questions in mind: What does each author think about consumer society? What is different if anything in their assessment of consumption and why? What is the same and why? What in their fictional accounts does or does not reflect reality? What historical circumstances and moral judgements inform their views?

In 1961, critic Lewis Mumford expressed dismay about new developments in America:
In the mass movement into suburban areas a new kind of community was produced, which caricatured both the historic city and the archetypal suburban refuge: a multitude of uniform, unidentifiable houses, lined up inflexibly, at uniform distances, on uniform roads, in a treeless communal waste, inhabited by people of the same class, the same income, the same age group, witnessing the same television performances, eating the same tasteless pre-fabricated foods, from the same freezers, conforming in every outward and inward respect to a common mold, manufactured in the central metropolis. Thus, the ultimate effect of the suburban escape in our own time is, ironically, a low-grade uniform environment from which escape is impossible.
To what extent did Mumford's description accurately reflect American society? In other words, did postwar consumption result in a homogenous, content, and conformist society? Write a five-page paper making sure to refer to specific historical facts and examples.

The Rise of Brand Names--gather primary evidence from sources such as advertisements, magazine or newspaper articles, testimony from congressional hearings, or store catalogues that documents the mass distribution of name-brand goods.
Bring 3 documents to class during Week #4 along with a 2-3 page analysis of the documents. Be prepared to share these with the class. It is your job to be creative in gathering the documents and decoding their significance.

The Impact of Advertising--gather primary evidence from sources such as advertisements, magazine or newspaper articles, and testimony from congressional hearings that documents the impact of advertising on American culture. How did advertising work? Think about that question from both the advertiser's and consumer's perspectives.
Bring 3 documents to class during Week #7 along with a 2-3 page analysis of the documents. Be prepared to share these with the class. It is your job to be creative in gathering the documents and decoding their significance. Try to relate your observations to the world portrayed in Babbitt.

Both Theodore Dreiser and Sinclair Lewis offer largely negative portrayals of the rise of a new consumer culture. But many observers regard the decades from roughly 1880-1930 as an era of progress with improved standards of living. Did America's new consumer culture bring progress in this period?
In many societies and historical periods, technological development and cultural change are often intertwined. How did technology reshape American culture from roughly 1880-1930?

When Vance Packard was writing in the 1950s, intellectuals derided the consumerism of American society for its tendencies toward conformity and homogeneity. Dwight Macdonald argued that mass consumption had the same impact on and affected everyone in the same way. "It is fabricated by technicians hired by businessmen; its audiences are passive consumers, their participation limited to the choice between buying and not buying." In the postwar period, was this tendency toward homogenization true or false, and how so? Be sure to explain and to consider material from both Packard and Brooks.
In Thorstein Veblen's, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), Veblen maintained that in affluent societies, people establish their social position through spending, hence the phrase "conspicuous consumption." Over the last century, critics from Dreiser to Brooks have criticized consumption, but not always in the same ways. As consumer culture evolved so too did the critiques. What were the critiques of postwar consumption? To what extent and how have they changed?

Medieval and early modern Russia stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. In this course we will examine some of the native developments and foreign influences which most affected the course of Russian history. Particular topics include the rise of the Kievan State, the Mongol Yoke, the rise of Muscovy, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, relations with Western Europe. How did foreigners perceive Russia? How did those living in the Russian lands perceive foreigners? What social relations were developing between nobility and peasantry, town and country, women and men? What were the relations of each of these groups to the state? How did state formation come about in Kievan and Muscovite Russia? What were the political, religious, economic, and social factors affecting relations between state and society? In examining these questions we will consider a variety of sources including contemporary accounts (both domestic and foreign), legal and political documents, historical monographs and interpretive essays.

Overview
Medieval and early modern Russia stood at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. In this course we will examine some of the native developments and foreign influences which most affected the course of Russian history. Particular topics include the rise of the Kievan State, the Mongol Yoke, the rise of Muscovy, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, relations with Western Europe. How did foreigners perceive Russia? How did those living in the Russian lands perceive foreigners? What social relations were developing between nobility and peasantry, town and country, women and men? What were the relations of each of these groups to the state? How did state formation come about in Kievan and Muscovite Russia? What were the political, religious, economic, and social factors affecting relations between state and society? In examining these questions we will consider a variety of sources including contemporary accounts (both domestic and foreign), legal and political documents, historical monographs and interpretive essays.
Grading
Participation in the course will be evaluated as follows:
Weekly response papers (1-2 pages each) and class participation (20%)
Essay on the decline of Kievan Rus' (5-7 pages) due after lecture 7 (20%)

The Primary Chronicle entry for the year 862 reads: "The Slavs, the tributaries, of the Varangians drove them back beyond the sea and, refusing them further tribute, set out to govern themselves. There was no law among them, but tribe rose against tribe. Discord thus ensued among them, and they began to war one against another. They said to themselves: 'Let us seek a prince who may rule over us, and judge us according to the law. ' They accordingly went overseas to the Varangian Rus: these particular Varangians were known as Rus, just as some are called Swedes, and others Normans."
Russians in later centuries have come back to this passage again and again as emblematic of their history. Consider two or three moments in the course of Russian history when discord has threatened to overwhelm the state structure. What were the problems of the moment? How did state institutions respond or fail to respond? How did the system eventually "right" itself and move forward?
In 1589 tsarist authorities, headed by Boris Godunov, succeeded in naming their own patriarch as head of the Russian Orthodox Church for the first time in Russian history. Comment on the significance of this event.
Boris Yeltsin and his advisers have been struggling with the issue of tax collection for many years now. How did prerevolutionary rulers in Kiev, Moscow and St. Petersburg cope with this same issue of tax collection?
Recently Yeltsin abruptly changed his almost his entire Cabinet of ministers in what Western journalists referred to as a "political crisis." A number of the demoted ministers have ended up with plum positions in newly privatized industries where they are able to build up immense personal fortunes. After this semester in medieval Russian history, this development may not be surprising to you. How might this seem reminiscent of earlier developments in Russian history?
In 1698 Tsar Peter I is reported to have said, "If I were not tsar, I would wish to be an admiral [of the navy in] Great Britain." In what ways do you think Peter was and was not like an admiral in the substance and style of his rule?
In 1931 Stalin wrote: "To slacken the tempo would mean falling behind. And those who fall behind get beaten. But we do not want to be beaten. No, we refuse to be beaten! One feature of old Russia was the continual beatings she suffered because of her backwardnes. She was beaten by the Mongol khans. She was beaten by the Turkish beys. She was beaten by the Swedish feudal lords. She was beaten by the Polish and Lithuanian gentry.[...] All beat her - because of her backwardness, military backwardness, cultural backwardness, political backwardness, industrial backwardness, agricultural backwardness." Stalin obviously had an acute and particular sense of history. Comment on this quote. You may disagree or disagree with him, but please formulate an argument and use evidence to support it.

Throughout American history, the experience of war has fundamentally shaped the ways that Americans think about themselves, their fellow Americans, and the meanings of national citizenship. War has also posed challenges of representation, both for those who fought as well as those who did not. This subject examines how Americans have told the stories of modern war in history, literature, and popular culture, and interprets them in terms of changing ideas about American national identity.

课程要求
本课程成功与否取决于同学们的主动参与,因此课堂参与(15%)是主要评分项目之一,评分标准在于同学们对课程的准备、参与程度、 主动聆听、合作、以及整体的贡献,如果有人缺席,无须多说,当然就无法对课程做出任何贡献。此外,所有同学要各自选择阅读作业,并于学期最后两周主持相关主题的讨论 (10%)。
虽然本课程要求数篇书面报告,但篇幅都很短:第一篇报告只须一两页,不予评分,之后的三篇报告须四至五页 (每篇各占20%)。报告截止日期当天,同学必须一上课就亲自交出书面报告,延期交报告必须事先提出,且理由正当方能批准,一概不接受因计算机问题而迟交这样的藉口。请同学务必熟悉麻省理工学院对学术诚信的规定,如果有任何不清楚之处请即发问。

Writing in the wake of the Civil War, poet Walt Whitman insisted that "the real war will never get in the books." Throughout American history, the experience of war has fundamentally shaped the ways that Americans think about themselves, their fellow Americans, and the meanings of national citizenship. War has also posed challenges of representation, both for those who fought as well as those who did not. This subject examines how Americans have told the stories of modern war in history, literature, and popular culture, and interprets them in terms of changing ideas about American national identity.
Requirements
The success of this class depends on the active participation of all students. Classroom participation (15%) represents a substantial portion of the grade, and will be evaluated in terms of preparation, participation, active listening, collaboration, and overall contributions to the class experience during the term. Needless to say, if you do not attend a class it is impossible for you to contribute to it. In addition, all students will choose reading assignments and lead discussion (10%) during the last two weeks of the semester.
Writing assignments are frequent, but short: the first 1-2 pp. paper is ungraded, and is followed by three essays of 4-5 pp. (25% each). Writing assignments should be handed in on paper in person at the beginning of the class in which they are due. Extensions will be granted only for good reasons explained well in advance; computer malfunctions are never an acceptable excuse for a late submission. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with MIT's regulations on academic honesty and ask questions if anything is unclear.
Books
Copies of required books for the class have been placed on reserve at the Humanities Library. A number of readings will also be made available through the library's electronic reserve system (accessible through the class website) or by handout. Readings should be completed by the beginning of the class under which they appear, unless otherwise stated. At times, homework assignments require you to watch films. Course films are on reserve at the Film Office of the Comparative Media Studies Program; they can also easily be found at commercial video rental stores in the area.
