This course introduces students to some of the major social theories and debates that inspire and inform anthropological analysis. Over the course of the semester, we will investigate a range of theoretical propositions concerning such topics as agency, structure, subjectivity, history, social change, power, culture, and the politics of representation. Ultimately, all theories can be read as statements about human beings and the worlds they create and inhabit. 本课程的目的,在于导引学生了解应用于人类学分析中重要的社会学理论与思辩。在这学期里,我们研究的议题奠基于人类及其所创造居住的世界,包含了:能动性、结构、主体性、历史、社会变迁、权力、文化以及再现政策等。我们将应用理论以分析、解释或理解人类行为与社会关系;检视社会或历史情境的创造脉络;并反省过去的理论对当代对话与思辩的影响。

课程的第一部份将介绍古典社会学及人类学理论,分析两者的理论文本,并利用民族志分析讨论这些理论的延伸与应用。这部份关注结构与能动性的诠释,以及参与者的本能(主观性)。如果人类如同马克思所说,在无所选择的情境下创造自己的历史,是什么样的力量与结构在形塑并束缚我们的想法及行为?社会参与者如何创造他们自己,以及他们生活的情境?他们又如何转化?接续此基本概念,我们将审视当代的人类学理论与议题,讨论如何于再现政策及后现代理论中注入新的思维,以及跨国关系如何影响人类学家在其场域中的理论建构与文化再现。





课程要求


这是一堂密集的讨论课程,开给主修或副修人类学学生。其主要目标在于能够应用人类学与社会学理论的观念来诠释文化现象。学生将学习如何针对理论性文本做出正确的推论分析;连结例证与类别;分辨观察的过程、诠释与批判;并透过书写重现这些过程。我们将着重于校正与改写。

每一位学生需要撰写数篇短篇的期中报告以及一篇长篇期末报告,课程总时数为36小时(或以上),每堂课会分配阅读文献,并由学生轮流撰写阅读心得(每位学生三篇,每篇约4-5页),未撰写阅读心得的学生则须提供口语或书面的评论。

期末报告的主题由学生个别与教授讨论后决定,学生须于开学两周内与教授讨论、决定主题以及报告缴交时程表。

Syllabus (PDF)
This course introduces students to some of the major social theories and debates that inspire and inform anthropological analysis. Over the course of the semester, we will investigate a range of theoretical propositions concerning such topics as agency, structure, subjectivity, history, social change, power, culture, and the politics of representation. Ultimately, all theories can be read as statements about human beings and the worlds they create and inhabit. We will approach each theoretical perspective or proposition on three levels: (1) in terms of its analytical or explanatory power for understanding human behavior and the social world; (2) in the context of the social and historical circumstances in which they were produced; and (3) as contributions to ongoing dialogues and debate.

The first portion of the course examines classic statements of social and anthropological theory, analyzing them both as theoretical texts and in their amplification through ethnographic analysis. This section concentrates on interpreting structure, agency, and the "nature" of actors (subjectivity). If, as Marx proposes, humans make their own history, but not under circumstances of their own choice, what are the forces and structures that shape and constrain our ideas and our acts? How do social actors create themselves and the circumstances of their lives? How do they transform these? Following these basic topics, we examine contemporary theoretical debates about and within anthropology, focusing on how new insights into the politics of representation, post-modern theory, and transnational relations influence how anthropologists theorize and represent "culture" in their work today.





Requirements


This is a communications intensive course for the Anthropology minor and major. The goal is to be able to use, in writing, the concepts of anthropological and social theory to interpret cultural phenomena. Students will learn to write closely reasoned analyses of theoretical texts. They will learn to connect examples with categories, to distinguish processes of observation, interpretation, and critique, and to represent these processes through their own writing. We will emphasize revision and rewriting.

Each student will write several short papers and one longer final paper. Three short papers (approximately 4-5 pages) will cover assigned readings, with different students taking responsibility for a different week's assignment. Each paper will be distributed to the rest of the class at least 36 hours before class; students will provide oral and written comments on each other's papers.

The final writing assignment will be determined in discussion with the instructor. Each student should meet with the instructor within the first two weeks of class to discuss a topic for a final paper and to set up a schedule for submission of short papers.





Reading Materials


There have been no books specifically ordered for this seminar, although you may wish to purchase some which are generally available in area bookstores. Additional readings may be assigned as we develop paper topics. This is a provisional list of readings from which we can adapt, add or subtract, as we go along. In the Study Materials section, I have attached a set of helpful hints about how generally to work through long lists of readings. Specifically, for this course on theory, I suggest that you approach each reading with the following questions in mind:
Putting the work in the tradition of social theory. Try to get the big picture.
What is the phenomenon being explained?
What is the explanation offered?
How does this apply to a specific observable phenomenon in social relations, in other words, what examples can you generate to illustrate the explanation offered?
With whom (or what alternative point of view) might the author be arguing? Or, how does this explanation differ from other explanations for the same phenomenon?


Close textual reading.
Find some portions of the text you want us to discuss for close reading and interpretation.
Find portions that are difficult or unclear to you.
Find portions that you think exemplify the author's most important insights.





Grading


The final grade will be based on completion of assignments ( 35% ), quality of assignments (20% ), improvement over the semester ( 25% ), attendance and class discussion ( 20% ).

研习资料 :社会科学阅读引导:如何完成繁重的指定阅读材料


面对社会科学中任何课程繁重的阅读材料时,逐字逐行的阅读实际上是很难做到的,你必须学习广泛且集中的阅读方式。虽然仔细的阅读并诠释文本是社会科学的传统之一,却通常难以实践,特别是在导论或中等程度的概论课程中。相对于逐字逐行的阅读方式,请参考以下建议让阅读更为有效率。





I.以月和周来组织阅读进度


仔细浏览所有的阅读材料,估计总量并尝试将所有的工作以周为单位做分配,有时指定的材料并非平均分配在每一周当中。虽然阅读文献多且不均,尽量尝试保持稳定的速度进行,可减轻负担且容易管理。建立自我的“报告工作进度表”(每篇报告所需时间应包含草稿、请他人评论、修改及完成稿)。





II.一切从摘要、前言、导论、结论开始


一般来说,作者会在摘要、前言、导论、结论等部份精练的说明文章重点,从这些地方开始阅读,可以帮助读者迅速理解要旨。然而,相系阅读文本也是必要的,那可以帮助读者了解与主题相关的例证。通常每一段落的主题句(第一个句子)都与整段的主题以及作者的主张密切相关。

III.如何阅读并做笔记


阅读文本并在旁边记下段落重点(或利用自黏便条纸、笔记本)。完成第一遍后,重新读过并以纲要方式整理笔记,重新组织句子与段落,试着将大量的文本浓缩成精练的笔记。(确定引用的精确度,以方便未来使用时,清楚引用他人的研究或声明,勿使自己无意中抄袭他人文章。)只画重点是不够而且被动的,对学习毫无帮助。为了充分了解文本,你应该在脑中以不同的角度重复思考内容,并以自己的措词用字重新阐述。

分析式的阅读:

将书或文章内容主题式分类,分析各主题适用于何种研究方式,本书的整体概念为何?

Guide to Reading Social Science: How to Work Through Long Reading Assignments


Faced with a long list of readings in any social science field, you need to learn to read extensively as well as intensively; it is rarely practical to read everything word for word and line for line. Although close textual reading and interpretation is part of social science tradition, it is often not possible, especially for introductory and intermediate level survey courses. Instead of trying to read every line and word, consider the following suggestions for more efficient and effective course reading.





I. Organize Reading Over the Weeks and Months


Look over the material to be covered (syllabus and tables of contents in assigned books). Estimate the amount of reading for the semester and try to divide the work on a weekly basis. Some weeks may have more reading assigned while other weeks less. Although the assignments vary, try to keep your work and pace steady. It will become less burdensome and easier to manage. Make sure to build into your schedule time for written assignments (including first, second and third drafts with time in between for other people's comments, rethinking and revision).





II. Begin Any Reading Assignment by Reading the Abstract, Preface, Introductions, and Conclusions


These are often the most important parts of any text because the author often signals his or her major themes and arguments. It is necessary, however, to look over, sometimes very carefully and completely, the central portions of the text to identify the evidence provided for the major themes/theses. Often, the topic (first) sentences of paragraphs provide the links in the author's argument.

Inspectional reading (of a book or article):

Look at the title page and the preface.
Study the table of contents to obtain a general sense of a book's structure.
Check the index.
Read the publisher's blurb.
Skim the summary statements in the opening and closing paragraphs of pivotal chapters.
Formulate what you think you know about this issue. What do you consider the essential points and key explanatory factors? You may know nothing about the topic; use this ignorance to devise a list of what you need the author to tell you in order to become informed.




III. Mechanics of Reading and Note Taking


Read the text and make marginal notes (on post-its or separate piece of paper) indicating what seemed like the strongest parts of the text. When you have completed reading once through the text, go back and take notes in outline form, by paraphrasing sentences or paragraphs until you have reduced the many pages of text to a few pages. (Make sure to keep an accurate citation to the work so that any future use of these notes and paraphrases can be appropriately cited. You do not want to find yourself engaged in plagiarism.) Do not rely on underlining. Do not rely on highlighting. This is insufficient. In order to "know" a text, you need to convert it into your own words, or your own organization of the text. The text needs to be processed in several different ways in your brain. Underlining is passive and does not help you learn the material.

Analytical Reading:

Classify the book or article according to kind and subject matter. Into what paradigm or research program (genre) does that work fit? What is the book about as a whole?


Enumerate the major parts in their order and relations, outline these as you have outlined the whole.


Define the specific problem or problems the author has tried to solve. What question does the author claim to address? You might also want to think about how this reading fits into the course. Why did the instructor place the reading at this point in the course? What is the topic on the syllabus? How does this reading provide an answer or information for this topic?


What theoretical statements does the author make? A theoretical statement proposes a relationship. For example, structural theories of deviance suggest that deviance (that which is to be explained) is a consequence of the structure (organization of the parts) of a society. In other words, social structure produces deviance.


What are the concepts and variables used? Become familiar with the author by defining key words. Know the details of the argument. In the example above: what is social structure? What is meant by deviance? Do structural theorists/writers assume the reader knows what is meant by social structure? Do you need to find out what this means in order to understand the reading.


How does the author's argument/position compare with that of others who address the same question or related questions? Where are the points of similarity and difference?


What normative statements (value judgments) does the author make? What values does the author assume readers will share? What assumptions do the author make that may be contestable?


What is the author's methodology? (Here you should be concerned not only with the methods used but the kinds of arguments implied or given about what methods are more or less appropriate.) What constitutes evidence in this reading? Know the author's arguments by finding them in, or constructing them out of, sequences of sentences.


Determine which of the problems the author has solved and which s/he has not; and of those not solved, decide which the author knows s/he has failed to solve. If you disagree with the author, on what basis do you rest your disagreement? Is the author uninformed, misinformed, illogical, imprecise, or incomplete? Criticize fairly; do not pass judgment based on personal opinion, taste, or preference. Is the argument internally consistent? Does the evidence (both that presented by the author and other evidence in the field) support the argument?




IV. Abstract


Full Bibliographic citation.
Thesis: 1-2 sentences.
Details: 3-4 well constructed paragraphs.
Themes: 3-4 bullet points defining and using author's key concepts.

It explores the nature of contemporary transformations, including those in economics, media & information technologies, population flows, and consumer habits, not through abstractions but by focusing on the daily lives of people in various parts of the world. This course considers such topics as the day-to-day impact of computers in Silicon Valley and among Tibetan refugees; the dilemmas of factory workers in the US and rural Java; the attractions of Bombay cinema in Nigeria, the making of rap music in Japan, and the cultural complexities of immigrant life in France. Are such changes positive, negative or simply inevitable? And, finally, how does the concept of the "global" itself shape our perceptions in ways that both help us understand the contemporary world and potentially distort it? This course begins by offering a brief overview of historical "world systems," including those centered in Asia as well as Europe. Requirements

This is a Communications Intensive (CI) class. Attendance at class and participation is essential. If you miss more than 2 class sessions without permission of the instructor, your grade will be lowered (a letter grade for every two classes).

Course materials must be read for the assigned day in class.

Written assignments include:

One 5 Page Paper (worth 20% of grade)
One 7 Page Paper (worth 20% of grade)
A final 10 page research paper on a topic of the student's own choosing which will be revised (worth 40% of grade)
Students will also give a brief 10 minute oral presentation based on their individually-researched papers. (The oral presentation combined with class participation will constitute the final 20% of your course grade.)

Essay 1
Write a 3 page essay on one of the following questions.

In Sweetness and Power, Sidney Mintz explores the history of a single "global" commodity - sugar. According to Mintz, how did the transformation in the meanings and uses of sugar and its changing patterns of production and consumption affect and transform relationships between different parts of the world? In answering this question, explore the following issues: How did the meanings and uses of sugar shift historically? What were the changing patterns of production and consumption associated with sugar? How did these patterns transform relationships between people living in different parts of the world? What kinds of power relationships emerged as part of these transformations?


Although "globalization" is often discussed as if it is unique to the current era, we have considered how different historical periods may also have been based upon "global" dynamics. Discuss Amitav Ghosh's novel, In an Antique Land, in relation to this issue. What types of historical "global" relationships does Amitav Ghosh attempt to uncover in his novel? (Be sure to offer specifics such as the time period, the regions affected, the business and cultural climate of the Indian Ocean, and the types of evidence he uses). Why does Ghosh think it is important to call attention to this history? How and why does he contrast this history with the contemporary period? (To offer greater context for the Indian Ocean trading world described in the novel, I recommend that you consult Janet Abu Lughod's book, Before European Hegemony.

Essay 2

Answer ONE of the following two essay questions. Your paper should be approximately seven pages in length.

Drawing heavily on the materials from this course, describe some of the economic transformations that occurred over the course of the 1980s and 90s. In what ways have the work and personal lives of the people we have studied been transformed? How have such transformations affected relationships between various parts of the world? What do you see as some of the long-term ramifications of such changes? In your view, are such changes generally positive, negative or some mix of the two? Make sure you offer an overview but also provide specific case examples that suggest the impact of these changes on people's everyday lives.


"Globalization" is also often used to signal political transformations in a post-Cold War era. According to Verdery, how did state socialism work and what is it currently in transition to? More broadly how is the end of the Cold War shifting how people think about relationships between different parts of the world?

Final Paper

Students must write a 10-13 page final research paper based on a topic of their own choosing. Topics must in some way explore issues relating to "globalization" as discussed during the class and suggest how relationships between particular regions of the world are being configured in relation to their chosen topic. Students must reference at least two of the class readings. Students may utilize current newspaper and magazine articles and information found on the internet, as well as relevant academic literature.

Past topics have included: the differential impact of drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis on different parts of the world; the molding of MTV content to fit different national contexts; the international impact of the Bombay film industry; regional perspectives on the United Nations; the impact of "outsourcing" on different parts of the world; the "global" dimensions of the Korean fashion industry; differences in the social meanings of hip hop in the U.S., Germany and Tanzania; Silicon Valley as a social and technological node of "globalization"; the increasing internationalization of professional basketball in the US; and the international impact of professionals trained at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Description
How — and why — do people seek to capture everyday life on film? What can we learn from such films? This course challenges distinctions commonly made between documentary and ethnographic films to consider how human cultural life is portrayed in both. It considers the interests which motivate such filmmakers ranging from curiosity about "exotic" peoples to a concern with capturing "real life" to a desire for advocacy. Students will view documentaries about people both in the US and abroad and will consider such issues as the relationship between film images and "reality," the tensions between art and observation, and the ethical relationship between filmmakers and those they film.


Requirements

Attendance at class and participation is essential and constitutes 10% of course grade.

Course materials must be read for the assigned day in class.

Written assignments include:

For each of the films viewed in class, a 1-2 page reaction paper.
One 5-7 page paper (undergraduates).
Two 5-7 page paper (graduate students).

2004春季课程:记录文化

作业:每周心得报告
Weekly Reaction Paper
每周针对课堂上观赏的电影,必须缴交一份 1-2 页的心得报告,交件时间为影片观赏后次周,报告总篇数至少为学期全部课程数减一;报告内容应参考当周阅读材料及课堂讨论,发表学生自己对该部电影的分析与论点。
A written 1-2 page reaction paper on the films viewed in each class will be due each week. The papers are due the week after the viewing. Students will be allowed to skip one reaction paper over the course of the term. The reaction papers should convey the student's own analysis and views of the film while also referencing that week's readings and class discussion.

除非因病或其他检附证明文件的紧急状况,逾期报告一律拒收,唯请务必于交件日期前与导师联络。
No reaction papers will be accepted late unless a student is ill or there is some other documented emergency. Students must contact the instructor before the paper's due date.

Everyday we are bombarded with the word "global" and encouraged to see globalization as the quintessential transformation of our age. But what exactly does "globalization" mean? How is it affecting the lives of people around the world, not only in economic, but social and cultural terms? How do contemporary changes compare with those from other historical periods? Are such changes positive, negative or simply inevitable? And, finally, how does the concept of the "global" itself shape our perceptions in ways that both help us understand the contemporary world and potentially distort it? This course begins by offering a brief overview of historical "world systems," including those centered in Asia as well as Europe. It explores the nature of contemporary transformations, including those in economics, media & information technologies, population flows, and consumer habits, not through abstractions but by focusing on the daily lives of people in various parts of the world. This course considers such topics as the day-to-day impact of computers in Silicon Valley and among Tibetan refugees; the dilemmas of factory workers in the US and rural Java; the attractions of Bombay cinema in Nigeria, the making of rap music in Japan, and the cultural complexities of immigrant life in France. This course seeks not only to understand the various forms globalization takes, but to understand its very different impacts world-wide.

各堂指定的课程资料必须事先预习准备。

书面作业包括:

5 页长报告一份 (占总分 20%)
7 页长报告一份 (占总分 20%)
10 页长的期末专题研究报告一份,自选主题,可变更 (占总分 40%)
学生另须根据各自的专题研究发表 10 分钟的口头报告。(口头报告和课堂参与表现合计占总分 20%)

Description
Everyday we are bombarded with the word "global" and encouraged to see globalization as the quintessential transformation of our age. But what exactly does "globalization" mean? How is it affecting the lives of people around the world, not only in economic, but social and cultural terms? How do contemporary changes compare with those from other historical periods? Are such changes positive, negative or simply inevitable? And, finally, how does the concept of the "global" itself shape our perceptions in ways that both help us understand the contemporary world and potentially distort it? Requirements

This is a Communications Intensive (CI) class. Attendance at class and participation is essential. If you miss more than 2 class sessions without permission of the instructor, your grade will be lowered (a letter grade for every two classes).

Course materials must be read for the assigned day in class.

Written assignments include:

One 5 Page Paper (worth 20% of grade)
One 7 Page Paper (worth 20% of grade)
A final 10 page research paper on a topic of the student's own choosing which will be revised (worth 40% of grade)
Students will also give a brief 10 minute oral presentation based on their individually-researched papers. (The oral presentation combined with class participation will constitute the final 20% of your course grade.)

Essay 1
Write a 3 page essay on one of the following questions.

In Sweetness and Power, Sidney Mintz explores the history of a single "global" commodity - sugar. According to Mintz, how did the transformation in the meanings and uses of sugar and its changing patterns of production and consumption affect and transform relationships between different parts of the world? In answering this question, explore the following issues: How did the meanings and uses of sugar shift historically? What were the changing patterns of production and consumption associated with sugar? How did these patterns transform relationships between people living in different parts of the world? What kinds of power relationships emerged as part of these transformations?


Although "globalization" is often discussed as if it is unique to the current era, we have considered how different historical periods may also have been based upon "global" dynamics. Discuss Amitav Ghosh's novel, In an Antique Land, in relation to this issue. What types of historical "global" relationships does Amitav Ghosh attempt to uncover in his novel? (Be sure to offer specifics such as the time period, the regions affected, the business and cultural climate of the Indian Ocean, and the types of evidence he uses). Why does Ghosh think it is important to call attention to this history? How and why does he contrast this history with the contemporary period? (To offer greater context for the Indian Ocean trading world described in the novel, I recommend that you consult Janet Abu Lughod's book, Before European Hegemony.

Essay 2

Answer ONE of the following two essay questions. Your paper should be approximately seven pages in length.

Drawing heavily on the materials from this course, describe some of the economic transformations that occurred over the course of the 1980s and 90s. In what ways have the work and personal lives of the people we have studied been transformed? How have such transformations affected relationships between various parts of the world? What do you see as some of the long-term ramifications of such changes? In your view, are such changes generally positive, negative or some mix of the two? Make sure you offer an overview but also provide specific case examples that suggest the impact of these changes on people's everyday lives.


"Globalization" is also often used to signal political transformations in a post-Cold War era. According to Verdery, how did state socialism work and what is it currently in transition to? More broadly how is the end of the Cold War shifting how people think about relationships between different parts of the world?

Final Paper

Students must write a 10-13 page final research paper based on a topic of their own choosing. Topics must in some way explore issues relating to "globalization" as discussed during the class and suggest how relationships between particular regions of the world are being configured in relation to their chosen topic. Students must reference at least two of the class readings. Students may utilize current newspaper and magazine articles and information found on the internet, as well as relevant academic literature.

Past topics have included: the differential impact of drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis on different parts of the world; the molding of MTV content to fit different national contexts; the international impact of the Bombay film industry; regional perspectives on the United Nations; the impact of "outsourcing" on different parts of the world; the "global" dimensions of the Korean fashion industry; differences in the social meanings of hip hop in the U.S., Germany and Tanzania; Silicon Valley as a social and technological node of "globalization"; the increasing internationalization of professional basketball in the US; and the international impact of professionals trained at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
